History of Maysville Dairy Queen® Maysville Dairy Queen®, located at 1629 Maysville Ave., started life over 50 years ago as the Pylon Drive In. Built in 1948 by Paul Corbett and his mother Mary, Paul ran the business and Mary did the cooking. The Corbetts also ran Corbett Motor Freight just a half block away on Grove Ave. The Corbetts only operated The Pylon for about a year as the freight business took most of their time. Between 1950 and 1953 the history of Maysville Dairy Queen® is a little fuzzy. Sometime in this time frame The Pylon became a part of the Dairy Queen® system, owned by Roy Gilmore and his wife from Columbus, Ohio. In January of 1953 Lawrence and Louise Benson of Chillicothe, Ohio moved to Zanesville and bought the Dairy Queen® business from the Gilmores, leased the real estate from the Corbetts, and bought a house on Alfred Street within sight of the Dairy Queen®. The Bensons operated Maysville Dairy Queen® for the next 30 years. The Bensons saw many changes in the south side of Zanesville and employed many of its youth during their 30 summers of Dairy Queening®.
In 1982 Bill Grizzard bought the Dairy Queen® from the Bensons. Bill had worked at Maysville Dairy Queen® in the early 1960's when he was in high school. In 1984, Bill purchased the real estate from the Corbetts. Bill operated the Dairy Queen® through out the 1980's and in 1990 the business was sold to Don and Lorayn Stillion.
Don and Lorayn Stillion owned and operated the Maysville Dairy Queen® from 1990 to 1997. Don and Lorayn also owned and operated the Maple Ave. Dairy Queen® from 1983 to 1999.
In 1997 Bill Grizzard bought back from the Stillions what he had sold to them. Bill continued to operate the Maysville Dairy Queen® thru the 1998 season. In 1998, Bill began to plan major changes for the Dairy Queen®.
In 1999 Bill Grizzard and Jeff Campbell formed Campbell and Grizzard Inc., and built a new building to house Maysville Dairy Queen®.
The new building, at 2160 square feet, is 3 times the size of the old building, and has inside seating for 40 customers, drive thru service and Dairy Queen® cakes. The new building was completed in late October 1999, and was opened for business November 15, 1999. The new Dairy Queen® is now open all year, not just in the summer.
